Weekly Recap, taper madness, a pacing question, and a winner!!

I love love love Hyperbole and a Half... I started writing my first sentance, and realized it sounded like I was a little dumb, unless you were also familiar with this post... I'm sorry to have ruined any chance of productivity for your day.

I did ALL THE THINGS I had planned for last week.

Monday: Suck Less Program done
Tuesday: Ran 3.5 miles (ish). I had a running buddy, and we spent a lot of time chatting and walking fast, rather than running, so. Oops. It was worth it :D
Wednesday: Yoga!!, and Suck Less Program
Thursday: 5 miles done, some speed work, but I felt crappy. I was scheduled for 4, but made up my missing time from Tuesday. #1 came with me, and put me to shame.
Friday: Suck Less Program
Saturday: Scheduled for 6, did 6.2 to complete the Jelly Bean Virtual 10K (recap to come)

Plan for this week....
Monday: Suck Less Program
Tuesday: 4 miles easy pace
Wednesday: Suck Less Program
Thursday: 3 miles easy pace
Friday: Suck Less Program
Saturday: REST
Sunday: 13.1

So, my pacing issues.

Prior to about three weeks ago, I was pretty consistent with a 11:25-11:45 pace on my 5-mile mid week runs.

Then, magically, I was consistently running 10:35-10:45.

I kept my long runs at a slower pace, just getting the miles in.
8.5 miles - 12:21 pace
9 miles - 11:46 pace
10 miles - 11:45 pace
6.2 - 11:21 pace

It's certainly getting easier to HOLD a faster pace...

But maintain it?

For 13.1 miles?

Questionable.

I would LOVE to hit 2:20. Can I? Possibly.

I'll be happy with 2:30. But I think that's an easy goal to make. I feel like I could do that with minimal effort. That seems like cheating.

I *know* I'll PR. Unless Princesses and Pirates magically show up and force me to stand in a million lines for pictures.

What think the more experienced racers?

And, of course, taper madness is in full swing. I have random, unexplained aches and pains and made up problems :D. I'm sure I'll be spending my day stalking pace calculators and googling "Why does my shin muscle hurt?"

6 more days of this nonsense!

Winner winner!

  1. I swear once I finished my final double digit run before this upcoming race, the madness kicked in HARD!!

I mean I was sure I rolled my ankle, I thought I was falling backwards down the concrete stairwell, I thought I was getting a cold, I have been all sorts of mad! At least not mad as in angry. Just completely loony tunes!!

  3. I can't tell you the amount of time I've spent on Hyperbole and a Half. I only found it a few months ago, and since then I've gone back to the very beginning of her archives and started reading all of her posts in chronological order. The girl is a freaking comedic genius.

  4. I would say to just focus on the finishline and enjoy the race and a surprise of a PR will happen because your not thinking about it.

As for the shins, I suggest ice and foam rolling them

  5. The race day adrenaline will be there too--you must attempt a 2:20. (I think you've got it!)

  6. Tapering is good and bad at the same time. oh and my sister in law gave me a Spagatta nadle running shirt. It is all kinds of awesome.

  7. Just doing my Suck Less program and reading blogs in between sets ... and I won, I won! Yay! Thank you!

I'm thinking of having ABC goals. Maybe you should do that, too. You WILL PR. I know it!

  8. You can totally do it! I just half-marathon PR'd last year after several years of running and getting older.
I LOVE her posts...my favorite is the "Parp" one..and the illustrations make me pee my pants.

  9. You can do it! Just be sure not to go out too fast at the start & you'll be fine :)

  10. Most definitely you can hit a 2:20 so long as the weather behaves. I train at an 11 min/mile... long runs just barely above that... but can hold around a 10 min/mile for a half... on a good day, that is. But let the race excitment carry you, you can totally pull off a 2:20... just don't go out too fast. I know you'll kick rear!!!

  11. I agree with the others. You've got that 2:20! Good luck fending off the taper tantrums.
