Who is more foolish? The fool or the fool that follows it?

Let's discuss Bikram Yoga.

I bought a Groupon a few weeks ago, thanks to my friend Snork and her peer pressure. I'd never tried Bikram yoga, but I love regular yoga, and it was a steal at $25 for 25 classes (one class at this studio is $20). After my long run Saturday, I thought for SURE yoga would be lovely on Sunday to stretch things out. Mother of pearl, never, ever, ever again. Eff you, Bikram.

After we showered (I have never been so sweaty in my life, and I grew up in Florida), we hit Souplantation for lunch, and watched how a Baby rules the Snork's world. It was pretty amazing, and ended with a pile of trays, cups, and food crashing to the floor. A pile. It was a grand exit.

Plan for the Week!

Last week - 34 miles!

Tuesday: 8 miles, trails, pretty great (actually, I think it started super sucky, but I have run-nesia, and only remember that I loved it)
Wednesday: Conditioning and wall squats, terrible
Thursday: 8 miles,scheduled for 14x400 at 2:08 (8:33 pace). Actual = 1.62 warm up, 2:01, 2:05, 2:01, 2:03, 2:04, 2:05, 2:04, 2:05, 2:01, 2:03, 2:07, 2:07, 2:04, 2:02. 1.21 cool down. *
Saturday: 18 miles. **
Sunday: 90 minutes of stupid yoga

This week:
Today: REST
Tuesday: 8 miles easy, probably hitting the trails again
Wednesday: Conditioning
Thursday: Progressive tempo <--no part of that sounds fun
Saturday: 20 miles

*The 14x400 kicked my ass. That was HARD. I ran them on the closed side of a local river path (ooooh, rebel) - down one direction 400, RI, back the other direction 400. I SWORE I was running into the wind in both directions. I saw Tall Sarah bobbing through her Thursday LR on the other (open) side of the path, and was relieved to hear she felt the same way. Wind, both directions. HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE. Wind is so rude. BUT, considering I am still learning how to pace myself outside, and use my Garmin, I was fairly consistent in my times. Even if they were a little faster than I intended, they were consistently fast...

**First 9 with Snork, second 9 with PCRF. This was HARD. I am 97% sure I brought that upon myself - I've been thinking that I was overdue for a crappy long run, and ta da, there it was. I never felt like I COULDN'T do the distance, so that is encouraging, but it never felt easy or fun or good. Oh well.

*************************************************************************

Question for smarter people:

My long runs are interrupted by me traveling 10 minutes down the road to meet up my PCRF group. They run at 8, and to prevent me from running all day, I do my first half super, super early, then drive over and meet them. This works out pretty well, because I try to convince my friend Snork to meet me for my early run, since she's ALSO in training for PCRF (her first half!). BUT.

Am I doing a disservice to the distance by taking, essentially, a 10-15 minute break in between??

Inquiring minds....

  1. I often break up my long runs. Sometimes by an hour or more. If you're only stopping for 10 minutes, I wouldn't consider that a big deal.

  2. I agree with B. Congrats on another mileagestone. Yep, I just made up that word.

Oh, and I thought you gave in to beer pressure. I must stop multitasking whilst reading blogs. Beer pressure sounds way more fun than peer pressure, though.

  3. agree that it is not a big deal to split up the long run... i've even read that if you split it between the morning and the evening that is also fine.

  4. This is all good to know because I will be doing this this summer as I train for Chicago. I just can't see doing 20 mile runs in 80 temps and getting sick doing it. We'll see though. My husband loves Bikram but he's weird.

  5. well I will be coming back to see what people have to say about the LR. I want to know the answer also. I have read both it is ok and no it is not but 10 minutes I think is not significant enough to call this breaking the LR. You get a mini rest but over a really long period of time and distance. I bet some people have potty breaks close to 10 min on LR days!

  6. Whether you do it all at once, or in two or three runs, it doesn't matter. Rest gives you a chance to be more efficient after the break. If you did the miles, you did them.

  7. don’t think that short of a break is that big of a deal…still haven’t tried hot yoga and your post makes me want to continue that trend :):) awesome mileage month too!

  9. That's a lot miles last month!

if you're worried about the long run splitting, maybe do one without a break. See if you feel different in the last quarter of the run. If not, then it's probably not a big deal.
