Went for Covid tests. </p><p>Wed: more nothing. Went for more Covid tests, because I was confused. </p><p><b>Thurs/Fri</b>: Flying forever. I spent the whole week panicked over Covid testing: I understood the testing entry requirements for NL to be a negative PCR within 48 hours of your flight. I did not consider that it could be from the connecting flight, not the originating flight, and the Verifly app (which is HOT GARBAGE) wouldn't accept our original covid tests because they were 48 hours from our AUS-DFW flight, but more than 48 hours from our DFW-AMS flight. In a panic, we went and got a second test on Wednesday, but we didn't have results by the time we had to leave for the airport, and we still hadn't checked into our flights 3 hours before we were scheduled to leave. B was acting like I was a crazy person, but I was like 64% sure we wouldn't be getting on a plane that day. </p><p>But, the agent checked us in with our original tests and everything was fine and we had a generally easy flight, and I even managed to sleep for a few hours. For some reason, B didn't wake me up for breakfast (why??), so when we finally landed in Amsterdam, I was famished. </p><p>Passport control was easy, we figured out the train and metro super quickly, and made it to <a href="https://www.sirhotels.com/en/albert/">our hotel</a> within an hour. This meal was so good, and everything I hoped it would be - the dark tiny dish on the bottom right is some sort of chicken that my grandmother used to make for us, but she died before I could get the recipe from her. I tried, but she always avoided the question, and would only say, "chicken, there's soy sauce, a lot of things". At dinner, I tried asking the owner of the restaurant (it was a very small place, he was very chatty), and he was like, "Chicken, soya sauce, that's it, things!". IDK what it is with Indonesians and this specific dish, but it's apparently a big secret. Even though 48 hours in Amsterdam was not nearly enough, I was excited to scoot to somewhere a little quieter and less chaotic, and it was a good location between our Monday plans and the airport Tuesday. They were both Indonesian, of Dutch & Swiss descent; during the Japanese invasion of Indonesia during WW2, they were lucky to both survive and after the war were able to eventually repatriate to Switzerland and then the Netherlands, and settling in The Hague. I've seen so many pictures of their home there, and on their visits back when I was little, they always sent postcards from the Hague, <a href="https://scheveningen.com/nl/">the beaches</a>, the <a href="https://www.madurodam.nl/nl">miniature village park</a> nearby. Tried to use the Verifly app again, and somehow this time it was just fine and we got checked in for our flight on the train en route. </div><div><br /></div><div>We got to the airport in plenty of time for breakfast, and then some time to lounge in the lounge - I've never lounged in a lounge, and I know this was not a pre-Covid lounge experience (super crowded, some minimal food choices) but I'm never mad about free snacks and beer. </div><div><br /></div><div>I was able to get an upgrade offer to business class for our TEN HOUR flight, and it was the best $300 per person that I've ever spent in my life. I drank a shitton of champagne, napped, watched movies, and drank more champagne. It was A DELIGHT. I missed it during Columbia Gorge training, and Strava just isn't the same for me. </p><p>I left my running group when I moved far, far away, so I've built my own training plan based mostly on the Run Less, Run Faster plan. I knew about this place thanks to Ghost Adventures (don't judge me), but it turned out to be fascinating and very haunting. Not in a spooky way, in a people can be really terrible way.<br />

I made some very, very poor footwear choices on Saturday, and spent Sunday hobbling around with numb toes. I was afraid I was permanently damaged, but thankfully, I seem to be okay today. No amputation, what a relief.<br />

This was the first week of working out without the trainer, and I kind of miss that guy. It was nice to have someone talking nonsense while I was dying, to distract me from that dying. It was also nice to just do what I'm told, and not have to piece together some well-rounded workout program. The heaviest weights we have at home are 10lb, so I don't know what I'm going to do when I need to increase weight. Use my gym membership, I guess.<br />

Travel/Plague<br />

I wasn't able to get in anything before I left for Chicago, and en route to Chicago, I started feeling like I was coming down with something.<br />
<br /><b>Wednesday </b>I was up at 5:30a for my flight, and finished at the office at 8:30p, so I was good and exhausted and immuno-compromised when I left.<br />
<br /><b>Thursday </b>I had an all-day meeting (7:15a-5:45p), and immediately after left to see....<br />

It was as amazing as I dreamed it would be, but had me walking back to the hotel at 11p, and by then I was dripping and coughing and it wasn't pretty.<br />

<b>Friday</b>, I was back for another long day of meetings and talking, and didn't get out of the office until I had to rush to O'Hare for my flight home. If you hear of a plague in the next few weeks that originated on a plane from O'Hare to Austin, I'm sorry.<br />
<br />
<b>Saturday </b>I laid around and watched TV while trying to stay awake/conscious. <b>Sunday </b>I thought I felt better and left the house but it was a terrible mistake. I remember asking my husband how it's possible one person's head could have so much snot in it. We've been married almost 20 years, he so lucky.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><u>Week 6</u></b><br />
<b>Monday </b>was no better. Still dying, but since I was out of the office the week before and had PTO planned for the rest of the holiday week, I dragged myself into the office and sequestered myself into a room. I quit around 3 and went home to rest before my 6p trainer appointment. I went to the gym, and I know I did stuff, but I didn't write any of it down so I don't know what it was. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯<br />
<br />
<b>Tuesday </b>I was still dying and worked from home on my PTO day.<br />
<br />
<b>Wednesday </b>I finallllllly started seeing a glimmer of hope! I felt a little less like dying! I went to the gym for my appointment, and rushed to the airport to pick up Lora. She was super excited to be in Austin for the holiday (she hates it here), and was really lovely and pleasant to be around (she was the worst for most of her visit).<br />
<br />
<b>Thursday/Friday</b> I did a lot of cooking and cleaning and stuff. I also bought a couch online, and paid <strike>an exorbitant</strike> a grown-up amount of money for it. We've been living with a tiny Ikea loveseat in this giant living room since we moved because we couldn't agree on a couch, but Thursday, I asked my husband so many times what he liked about this couch, or this rug, or this couch with this rug, that he told me to just buy whatever and stop asking. That's my strategy for every purchase going forward now.<br />
<br />
<b>Saturday </b>I don't remember what happened but Lora was still here so I'm sure it was tense.<br />
<br />
<b>Sunday</b>, I dropped Lora off at the airport, and then.....<br />
<br />
I ran and didn't want to die, so I'm probably recovered.<br />

I'm concerned my motivation will disappear once I'm done with the thing I'm paying for, but Friday I was bamboozled into training first. Never again shall I make that mistake - I was correct that it was harder, but even worse, the trainer suggested I incorporate some speedier (lol, "speedier" intervals) and then when I argued, busted out a training book explaining the science to me. I got confused by the words and did it and it was the worst. Tricky bastard. </span><br />

She finished 29th in the state in XC her senior year, and is now running collegiality. I tried to convince her the PNW is where it's at, but she selected a school in the south. Related, <span style="color: red; font-weight: bold;">she's now An Adult</span>, and apparently makes her own decisions. </span></li>

We wandered around the Fairhaven district for awhile and ate delicious, delicious pizza (for real, <a href="http://fatpiepizza.com/" target="_blank">Fat Pie Pizza in Bellingham</a>, you should go there). We took a walking tour of Western Washington U, which #1 did not LOVE, but I kind of did, and then ate all the food in the universe at <a href="http://www.bbaybrewery.com/" target="_blank">Boundary Bay Brewery</a>, which came recommended by internet friend Alma.</div>

After a super quick coffee with Alma at the craziest library I ever have seen, we took the ferry over to Bainbridge Island, which was fun for a couple hours (and so peaceful, besides the part when #1 lost her mind because she thought we might miss the ferry back, and didn't accept that there were later ferries to be had). </div>
